Music Impacts Your Emotions

Ever listened to a song and found yourself transported to a memory from 10, 20 or even 30 years ago that is so vivid it feels like you can reach out and touch it?

This is because when listening to music, areas related to the emotional and reward centers of the brain are activated. The temporal lobe and amygdala, both of which play an important role in recognizing and processing emotions, are highly active when listening to music. This indicates that music is closely tied to emotional experiences.

Even if your music is sad, you won’t feel depressed, because sad music triggers the release of a hormone called prolactin, which has a sedating and comforting effect on mood.

Music Boosts Your Immune System

It’s no secret that high amounts of stress can have a detrimental effect on your health and can also negatively impact your immune system thanks to the release of the stress hormone, cortisol. Music helps to lower the release of stress hormones, which not only helps you to feel better, but it improves your health too.

Music Alleviates Depression, Stress and Anxiety

When you are suffering from depression there is often a lack of the happy chemical, serotonin, in the brain.

However, pleasant, relaxed music increases the amount of serotonin in the brain, causing feelings of relaxation, joy and even pain relief. So be sure to put on your favourite jams, whether they are heart pumping beats or chilled jams, either way you’ll be benefiting your mind, body and spirit!
